Laptops for Kids

Laptops for Kids is a charitable organisation that facilitates the donation and distribution of new and used digital devices, enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to have access to the technology they need to continue with their education during the pandemic.

It started in Sheffield in September 2020 and has launched in Newcastle, Doncaster, Barnsley, Lancaster and Rotherham with more locations to follow. The campaign was established by David Richards, founder and CEO of WANdisco plc, and Nancy Fielder, editor of The Star newspaper in Sheffield.

Partners include Blancco plc, the global leader in certified data erasure, Twinkl, the online educational publisher, WANdisco plc, the data software company jointly headquartered in Sheffield and Silicon Valley, the BBC Make a Difference initiative, Natterhub, the educational social media platform, and the non-political Northern Powerhouse Partnership.

We need your help to ensure that every child is able to access remote learning. Laptops for Kids is appealing to businesses and individuals to make a donation to a region of their choice, with all funds raised being used to purchase refurbished laptops, spare chargers and to cover any additional costs necessary to provide pupils with safe, working devices as quickly as possible.

Laptops for Kids is in the process of incorporating as a charity. In the meantime, all cash donations are being handled by UK-registered charity the David and Jane Richards Family Foundation (www.djrff.org), whose trustees include Lord Kerslake.
