Cam & Coz's run to alleviate child poverty

Hi all,

We've decided to break out of the lockdown funk and do something for charity and we'd like you to join us.

Child poverty is a growing problem in the UK. According to government data, there were roughly 600,000 more British children living in relative poverty* in 2020 than there were in 2012. In the last few years, the number of children living in absolute poverty" has also grown. The pandemic is only likely to aggravate the problem.

Behind these statistics are hundreds of thousands of children whose life-chances are being blighted: kids who don't get three square meals a day, who lack basic items of clothing and who don't have any holidays to look forward to, lockdown or no lockdown.

School Food Matters is a grassroots initiative that works across 500 London schools to improve children's access to healthy, sustainable food. During the pandemic, the charity has partnered with UNICEF to deliver tens of thousands of nutritious breakfasts to needy kids. Over the next five years, SFM will deliver a childhood obesity programme in partnership with Guy's & St Thomas's Charity, and will begin to take its good work outside London.

We plan to run every other day for the next year to raise money for School Food Matters and we'd like you to join us! Disclaimer: if the blisters become too much, we may try our hand at other sports.

If you contribute, you will get the following (if you so choose):

- A monthly newsletter tracking our progress and pointing you towards some of the best journalism and scholarship on poverty, nutrition and inequality.
- Large contributors (£200+) will get the chance to run with us. One or both of us will come to run - or swim, cycle, hike or play tennis -  with you, Covid permitting.
- If possible, we will go and witness the charity's work first hand and report back.

So there's no time to lose. Join us and let's do our bit to improve the life chances of the UK's disadvantaged children.
