⭐️ SUPPORT ME TO FOLLOW IN ROB SWAN’S FOOTSTEPS ON HIS ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE, ADVOCATING THAT INDIVIDUALS CAN MAKE AN IMPACT⭐️
★ In November 2021 I am embarking on the 2041/ClimateForce expedition with Robert Swan OBE to Antarctica!★
This carbon neutral expedition has always been a dream of mine and I am so grateful to be 1 of the 80 international explorers selected to become Antarctic ambassadors!
As an 18 year old, I want to be a part of protecting the future of our planet.
◼️Growing up, I was aware of climate change and steps that I could take to counteract some of the negative impacts that I could make such as recycling and composting. But it is only recently that I have discovered how much more that I can do to reduce my impact as an individual; steps which are very accessible and easy for me to implement.
◼️I believe that sustainable living is a learning curve and I want to use this expedition to advocate that individuals can make a difference in their daily lives.
◼️It’s not just activists and scientists that can solve our climate problems we can make a difference too!
◼️As an aspiring doctor, I want to dedicate my life to safeguarding human life and doing the best I can to provide quality care to everyone in need. I believe that we can all contribute to this by taking steps to lower our carbon footprints.
◼️I have always lived in the Leicestershire countryside, so I have been surrounded by country parks and hills all my life. It has come to be a part of my routine to go for walks with the dogs up the hills and in the woods; experiences that I have been incredibly lucky to have experienced on a daily basis.
◼️I want to help protect our wild spaces so that the future generations can continue to live in and enjoy them.
◼️The thought of crossing the turbulent drake passage into the Antarctic brings me excitement, as I love being at sea and the thrill that it gives you. As an avid sailor, I feel a sense of adventure whenever I am in a boat and I have a great respect for the power of the nature.
◼️This appreciation that has been instilled in me from a young age, drives me to want to protect the oceans and the creatures that live within them from the threats of global warming and climate change.
MEDICINE AND CLIMATE CHANGE? WELL...
◼️There is an increasing indisputable link between climate change and global health as more ecosystems are destroyed around the world by deforestation or by the gradual warming of the earth.
◼️These changes make environments inhospitable and forces the animals who live there to migrate. These animals could be carriers of diseases not yet exposed to humans (such as the prevalent Covid-19).
◼️These effects of climate change are particularly relevant to this recent pandemic and are only just starting to be talked about and understood in mainstream society.
◼️A biology student myself, I plan to take this point of view onto the expedition and discuss it with the other explorers and experts.
THE EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA 2021❄️
◼️On this expedition I will take part in expert lead discussions, teaching us about climate science and find out exactly how our actions translate to the impact that we have on the planet.
◼️These lectures will also delve into the history of Antarctica and how important the continent is in understanding climate change; as nowhere else has experienced the consequences more than Antarctica.
◼️The awesome landscapes that I will see, are home to many unique lifeforms that can only be encountered in the Antarctic circle, adapted to the environment and to live surrounded by breath taking icebergs and glaciers. The biologist inside me can’t wait!
◼️We will all be following and taking part in the ‘Leadership On The Edge’ program, which aims to build personal leadership and collaboration among everyone taking part. Leading this will be Robert Swan, as well as Cameron Kerr, the Director of expeditions at Explorer’s passage and Elana Duffy, the CEO and founder of pathfinder.
◼️This expedition will also aim to be carbon neutral, with a Leave No Trace policy, and by acting under the Antarctic Carbon Negative Initiative calling for tour operators to offset their carbon emissions by 1.25 times.
GENERATING ACTION FROM THIS EXPEDITION⚡️
◼️The knowledge that I will gain on this expedition will help me to raise awareness for the impact that climate change has on the discovery and the transmission of diseases, including shedding light on the possibilities of super-viruses in the Antarctic permafrost.
◼️I will share everything that I’ve learnt on the trip online, including the science behind climate change and also the smaller things that everyone can do to be more sustainable on my social media platforms.
◼️By sharing these I hope to shatter the stigma that individual can’t make a difference on their own (there’s always something that can be done which is easy and accessible).
◼️I want to help educate the next generation, and pass on the learning from my expedition by talking at schools and events, helping to inspire them to be more sustainable. I will also take my experience to businesses and groups so that they can consider more eco-friendly practices.
TESTIMONIAL FROM ROBERT SWAN
◼️I am very glad to have received a testimonial from the famous explorer and TED speaker:
◼️My crowdfunding target is £5,000 which will make up part of the expedition cost, alongside sponsorships which I hope to gain in the near future. I hope to reach as many people as possible through this campaign, so I can share my knowledge and insight into climate change after I return.
◼️This crowdfunding phase is only the start of my fundraising journey, so by helping me exceed this target, my place on this expedition will be guaranteed. This means I can act on my promises and help make a difference in my community.
◼️ I will need to set aside some of this money for the flights from London to Buenos Aires and back, as well as the connecting flights from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia; where our expedition begins.
◼️Even though this expedition is taking place in the austral Summer, Antarctica can be very changeable and I need to bring extreme weather gear with me, ensuring that I am prepared for whatever we may encounter.
◼️Although my crowdfunding target is £5,000, the total amount I need to raise is £14,900. I am trying to secure corporate sponsorships for the remainder, however if this does not happen, I may not be able to go after all.
◼️If I exceed all the funds that I need, the excess will be donated to the 2041 Foundation, so that they can engage more people across the world on the issue of climate change and inspire them to act.
