Creating a campaign film: #WardieBay4BathingWater

In 2019, the Wild Ones wild swimmers and Wardie Bay Beachwatch applied to SEPA for designated Bathing Water status for Wardie Bay, situated between Granton and Newhaven Harbours in Edinburgh. We provided evidence of beach usage levels of over 150 people a day across the bathing season but the application was rejected by the current Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform. SEPA has invited us to submit a letter for reconsideration by the end of October 2020.

Wild swimming at Wardie Bay has blossomed, especially as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. Awareness, demand for local outdoor activity and people flow has risen exponentially. Consequently, the need for public health support has increased. We have been working hard to help generate support for our cause.

We would love if you could please read, sign and share our petition. The response so far shows the sheer number of people that enjoy swimming at Wardie Bay. Read our swimmers' wonderful 'reasons for signing' if you want to feel new pride in our neighbourhood. We hope to be included in Scotland's designated Bathing Waters in 2021. Our petition has already achieved 1,000 signatures in the first four days: https://www.change.org/WardieBay4BathingWater.

As part of our campaign, we are now planning a film, working with freelance photographer and videographer, Carlos Hernan. Carlos has generously offered his time and beautiful artistry in support of our cause but we would like to pay him an equivalent professional fee for supporting us. It is vital that we also support creative professionals in these very difficult times. Please see his portfolio here: https://www.photo-synthesis.net/

This target sum has been roughly calculated based on a very reasonable hourly rate, the time it will take, and basic expenses but not including materials and equipment.

We would be so grateful to receive any financial support. Karen Bates, volunteer organiser of Wardie Bay Beachwatch has set up this fundraiser. All proceeds will go to Carlos Hernan for his beautiful work.

With very best wishes and love from

Wardie Bay Beachwatch
