The FAI Junior European Gliding Championships (JEGC) 2021 is set to take place in Pociunai, Lithuania, from 10 to 24 July 2021. This will be the first time the competition has been held since 1997 and will see the world’s best under 26-year-old glider pilots competing for the title of Junior European Gliding Champion.
Around 100 pilots across Club and Standard classes will race over 14 days, flying a mixture of assigned area and racing tasks over distances of 120-500+ kilometres each day.
The 2021 British Junior Team consists of pilots Finn Sleigh (23), Toby Freeland (22), Henry Inigo-Jones (20), and Tom Pavis (24) with George White (18) and Olly Summerell (19) in reserve.
Finn and Toby make up the Club Class pair, flying handicapped 15m gliders with no water ballast. Finn and Toby are a new team for 2021. Previously, Finn competed as a team with Jake Brattle in the 2019 Junior World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, achieving highly successful Silver and Gold medals respectively. More recently, Finn and Toby have been working together and are very excited to start their 2021 campaign.
Henry and Tom are the Standard Class pair, flying 15 gliders, un-flapped, with ballast. Following on from an impressive year’s training in 2020, this will be their first opportunity to compete at international level.

The training, travel and competition costs for the team, including crews and Team Captain, are considerable. The British Team is fortunate to receive some generous sponsorship from both the British Gliding Association and the team’s own sponsors, namely McDonald's (York), Navboys, Lasham Gliding Society, Sydney Charles, Naviter and LXNAV. Even so, additional funds are necessary in order to successfully train and compete at international level alongside other well funded teams. This is where we need your help!
A crowdfunding campaign by the Junior Team in 2019 successfully raised over £7000. In light of this, the team has set a target of £10,000 to cover the expenses for the 2021 Junior European Gliding Championships. Any excess funds will be carried over to the 2022 team and Junior Development Squad.
To date, The British Junior Team have produced five Junior World Champions, brought home many medals, 1-2 finishes and team cups and many of the Junior Team pilots have gone on to represent the Senior British Team and even become Senior World Champions. These achievements are despite competing against teams with far higher budgets, team gliders and team staff. Any support you are able to offer will increase our chances of further success and will be gratefully received.

Additional Notes (Edit: 01/03/2021)
We still find ourselves in a COVID-19 pandemic. In the event that the JEGC is cancelled or postponed, any fundraising will be used by the team for the following year's campaign, which we expect to be the Junior Worlds in the Czech Republic.
