We already know a lot of frontline staff from transport, NHS, care homes and retail especially from BAME backgrounds have died as part of their role and duty in making us safe and delivery key services without the necessary PPE. Also, with emerging reports that 35% of BAME also have the virus and thus potentially disportionately affected in the death rate.
I know this from my own experience as my sister’s partner died a week ago of the virus and we are grieving as a family.
Working with the Ubele Initiative we have launched Majonzi Fund (in Swahili means grief or deep sorrow) to provide small grants to help families and work colleagues, community and faith groups so they can organise memorial events and tributes to celebrate and commemorate the lives of loved one’s post lockdown especially because of the government policy on social distancing have not allowed to give proper burial and religious ceremonies.
We will also want to raise money so individuals can access bereavement counsellors and therapists reflecting religious and cultural diversity of the community through a network of qualified therapists through a platform called AUNTIE .
The fund will be managed the Ubele Initiative, an African Diaspora led infrastructure and leadership organization which leading the work in the UK on developing a community response to BAME communities as result of Covid-19 in London and nationally Grants for memorials and tributes will be distributed in post lock down period.
Please donate and support this important cause in providing support and solace to families and local communities coming to terms with Covid-19.
