Save Indian Trans Lives: COVID Relief
ParivarBayArea is a Trans-led organization based in SF BayArea, with a mission to center TGNCI folx within and beyond the South Asian Diaspora to powerfully exist beyond cisness and welcomes all queer, gay, lesbian, intersex, bisexual, and allies to be a part of our collective liberation. Parivar is a legal nonprofit fiscally sponsored by LGBT Asylum Project, 501(c) 3 with EIN: 47-5301730
SITAL (Save Indian Trans AllINDIA Lives) is focused on Indian trans, hijra, intersex, third gender, and non-binary communities facing unprecedented neglect, isolation, infection, and starvation due to the ongoing covid-19 second wave. It is a pan-India effort working vigorously to support over 50+ communities/birdaris across 20 states, to begin with. This wave of COVID has wreaked havoc in India. In 2020, our efforts help save and support over 5000 folx with food, shelter, and rebuilding efforts from the first wave. And as the crises deepened in 2021, the Trans Hijra communities are once again marginalized, neglected, and reeling in starvation, isolation, and severe exposure to the infection. We need your help. Trans Hijra's lives are precious.
SITAL is a strategic initiative that really calls for your attention to include Trans Hijra Kinnar lives of India in every health effort including vaccine access, every community conversation, every rebuilding, and reopening effort.
Relief and Recovery:
Our grassroots relief efforts were focused on distributing food and health kits and mobilizing emergency medicine distribution to PLHIV and diabetic Trans folx, makeshift hospital, and quarantine spaces for COVID+ Trans Queer Folx, hospitalizations, and holding vaccine equity drives for Trans Hijra people. Through our SITAL warriors, our program reached 27 states and 2 union territories serving over 53 communities, directly or indirectly reaching over 50,000 Folx. We distributed over 30K food/medical kits across the country, irrespective of language, region, religion, caste, creed, or any other differences. Over 5000 individual donors and 16+ organizations helped us raise and dispense around $230K or about INR 1.8 crores across India. We are grateful to our SITAL partner SewaInternational for standing with us in reaching further isolated communities in the Northeast and helping us cover the costs of large communities in certain states.
In 2020, ParivarBayArea put forward efforts to protect Trans Hijra communities across 6 organizations. Just as we began rebuilding with Trans entrepreneurship efforts including the launch of our South Asian store parivarbazaar , the second wave took away our livelihood.
As we rebuild livelihoods, ParivarBayArea accepted small business enterprise proposals from the community and is now gearing up to fund the projects upon viability, credibility, and sustainability. We are raising close to $200K to provide microloans to over 51 viable businesses across 14 states and 1 union territory.

Hear from Parivar President Anjali Rimi and Vice-president Rachana Mudraboyina
Spearheaded by US-based Parivar Bay Area, fiscally sponsored by LGBT Asylum Project, this coordinated effort was a modest effort to support the 5 organizations that we work with throughout the year on Trans entrepreneurship, economic justice, and vocational trainings. However, the situation is so dire in this second wave that many organizations reached out to us pleading for rations and medical kits. And SITAL became a pan India effort overnight to help Indian Trans Hijra lives and is now working vigorously to support over 53 registered community organizations distributing critical supplies to over 10,000 communities spanning 44 districts in 23 states. We are swiftly working to scale and build the network to mobilize communities, gather community needs, gather resources and rations and distribute through our grassroots network.
Our Framework is focused on
a. Health Equity: As we build makeshift treatment spaces which are aimed to be within community spaces, we aim to work with local health partner CBOs to build sustainable nodal points to serve those that are isolated and more importantly those that have recovered from COVID-19 for continued support. We have begun gathering data from the community and trying to get appointments/slots for those that meet the eligibility. We aim to drive vaccine access and equity especially for those within the Hijra Trans community that do not have proper identification i.e. Adhar card, PAN card, etc. & more importantly those who can’t access online portals through their smartphones.
b. Information Equity: given that there is very limited data about The Hijra Trans community, we are beginning to build databases that will hold individual-level information across each location/district/CBO to ensure we can conduct follow-ups, continue support and help them return to normalcy in the long run. Such data collections are being done on excel docs entering handwritten lists maintained by the SITAL are being done on Excel and handwritten lists. This compilation will help us assess community needs with details and in a scaled manner.
c. Economic equity: One of ParivarBayArea’s key focus areas is to continue building capability amongst Hijra Trans folx. As we emerge from this second wave, we aim to continue helping folx rebuild by opening small-scale businesses, gain skills through vocational training and continued education.
Our core team of SITAL warriors identifies as Trans Hijra Women and non-binary Folx. We are effectively managing the operations, distributions, and mobilizing communities, educating about COVID prevention ways. The chair for SITAL is Rachana Mudraboyina, a legendary Trans activist based in Hyderabad who has worked with Hijra Trans communities for over two decades across India. Her primary focus is on driving operations, leading teams, working with communities and their leaders, Anjali Rimi is the president of ParivarBayArea working to drive the framework of the initiative, develop strategic relationships and fundraise for the effort. Our own community has Doctors, nurses, and social workers within our community who are part of distribution and outreach efforts.

For many decades now, the Trans Hijra communities within the South Asian Diaspora have been isolated, neglected, and pushed into further poverty and desperation gave the social stigma, false myths, and ignorance. The pandemic has furthered our marginalization. Our community has been left behind in all the large-scale relief efforts happening internationally and right here at home. We need your valuable help. Please support and save our lives.
