Every year I get asked by my mates George Bage and Tommy Wild to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge (usually when I have had a few beers I might add). Every year I agree then realise the next day what I have done and find a reason not to do it. George however, knowing how much Sunderland Primary School’s Football Association means to me, asked me to do it this year and raise funds for SPSFA in the process. He’s a wily old fox and knew that, if it was for the kids, I wouldn’t refuse and as a result I am now committed to doing it in May.
As it’s for SPSFA, I have roped in half of my Sunderland Boys management team and am delighted that my good mates Marty Richards and Marty Young have agreed to do it with me along with George, Tom and my good mates Stu Bailey and Gary James. A quality set of lads so spirits should be good whilst we attempt this challenge.
It is SPSFA’s 50th anniversary this season and we have been providing organised
football leagues and competitions for
Sunderland School children since 1971. If you went to a Sunderland Junior/Primary school in the last 50 years and played for the school team then it will have been organised and funded by SPSFA and by supporting us with this challenge you enable us to continue to do this for the current and future generations of Sunderland children.
We are proud to be a self funded Association. Like every other organisation/ charity in the country however we have seen our fundraising massively impacted by the Covid pandemic. Our annual Sportsman’s Dinner, which funds our association for the following 12 months, was cancelled in April 2020, rescheduled for and cancelled again in October 2020 and is unlikely to take place on the rescheduled date of April 30th this year so we will be waiting until the new date of October 2021 to hopefully hold the event. As there’s no school football being played at present in Sunderland, there’s no affiliation fees coming into the association either. Despite this, we still have our Sunderland Boys district under 11 side to run and have two presentation days to organise and pay for before our next Sportsman’s Dinner takes place. It’s also a very special season for the association given the fact it’s our 50th anniversary. We have various events planned to celebrate this but again we need the funds to allow us to do so.
Am I looking forwards to attempting this Three Peak challenge? I won’t lie, I am not looking forwards to it one little bit. I can think of a million reasons not to do it and only one reason to complete it. As that one reason is that, it’s for the kids, it far outweighs any reason I have for not doing it. If I am going to put my body through three peaks and 25 miles in 12 hours then hopefully I can help raise as much money for the kids in the process.
If you can help by sponsoring Marty, Marty, George, Tommy, Stu, Gary and myself then that would be brilliant, no matter how big or small your donation. If you could help by sharing this then that would also be brilliant. It’s an association that is very close to the hearts of Marty, Marty and myself and we are delighted the lads are helping us raise money for what we consider a worthy cause. If you can help us out in any way, shape or form then it will be massively appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
