Christmas Cards to Fight LGBTQ+ Isolation

The Rainbow Cards Project is a not-for-profit project aiming to combat isolation - and all the difficulties that can stem from it - faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community, by sending cards to individuals whose families have stopped sending them cards after they came out. This holiday season we have sent over 8000 cards to 800 recipients across 35 countries, but now we need your help to ensure this project has the funds to continue.

Christmas cards might not be a big deal to most people, but when your family has rejected you, not receiving cards during the holidays can be a painful reminder that you do not have their love and support. Being rejected and left isolated simply because of your gender or sexuality is devastating, and no-one deserves to feel unloved simply for living unapologetically as themselves. That’s why for the past 3 years I’ve been sending holiday cards for LGBTQ+ folks with unsupportive families, showing them that they have a whole community behind them and they are far from alone.

Unfortunately, postage costs stack up rapidly, especially when you’re sending hundreds of packages internationally. Just sending this year’s holiday cards alone has cost over £2000 in postage fees and in order for this project to continue we need to raise more funds. I want to ensure we will have enough to continue this project into the new decade and keep sending cards to those who need them, so no-one is left feeling alone at Christmas! To ensure we can continue this project next year, we need to raise £2500. All funds raised will go towards the continued postage costs of sending packages of cards to isolated LGBTQ+ folks and keeping the project running.

I know cards seem like a relatively small thing, especially in a time where it feels like so much is going wrong in the world and there’s so many causes that need our support, but I think that’s exactly why small things like cards are important. So many LGBTQ+ people are not only carrying the weight of the lack of support from their family, but they are also subjected to a wider hostility from the political environment, and so we need the little bursts of joy that things like a bunch of Christmas cards through your letterbox can provide. As the founder of this project, I regularly hear incredibly touching things from those who have received their cards. So many people have cried tears of happiness upon seeing the love that strangers all over the world have for them, so many have described a feeling that they are much less alone than they thought, and I have even been told that this project saved someone’s life by helping them see that no matter how dark things may seem, someone out there will always care.

Thank you in advance to everyone who decides to donate or even share this campaign - with your help we will ensure no-one is left feeling unsupported and unloved. With your help, we will create a family for those who have none.
