Walking The Length Of The UK For Rewilding

Walking The Length Of The UK For Rewilding | Coast to Coast
A 1400-mile unsupported walk from Land’s End to John o’ Groats

At the end of April I, Lucy Jarvis will be setting off to walk the length of the UK. The walk will start from Land’s End in Cornwall and end at John o’ Groats in Scotland. The two points known as the end to end of the UK. The chosen route is estimated to total about 1400 miles in length and will be undertaken for the majority solo and unsupported. I will be raising money for the Somerset Wildlands, a new rewilding initiative in the Somerset Levels.

Through the walk I hope to raise £4000 for Somerset Levels. If I can reach my fundraising target of £4000 it will allow Somerset Levels to purchase a further one acre of land for the purpose of rewilding. Somerset Levels is an incredibly important initiative that is working hard to restore our precious ecosystems and is one I believe that we all need to be aware of. The walk, estimated to be around 1400 miles in length will take approximately 2-3 months, with a completion date of early August.

Somerset Wildlands is a not-for-profit dedicated to making space for nature through rewilding, starting in the Somerset Levels. The Somerset Levels were once England’s Okavango Delta. From pelicans to lynx, beaver to sturgeons, it would have teamed with wildlife, much of it now gone. Somerset Wildlands is aimed at restoring some of that lost wildlife and wilderness through a process of distributed rewilding.

As Somerset Wildlands restores wildlife to parts of the Levels they will seek ways to reconnect people with nature - through practical activities like nature surveys, school excursions or small scale reintroductions. They will also be alert to opportunities to bring wildlife into the cities, starting with Bristol where many of their supporters live and work. This may include urban orchards and gardens, campaigns to change planning to benefit wildlife, education and events.
