JUSTICE FOR ZAKARIYYA ISLAM
Releasing the killer is a serious risk to the community
Need a change in the law

Who was Zakariyya Islam?

Zakariya Islam was an ordinary man, a married father of three daughters, a driving instructor by day, much loved, and highly respected in the community. What made him extraordinary was that he touched the lives of thousands of people in his spare time by helping them selflessly.

His life was callously and brutally taken in September 2015, when he was killed during a frenzied knife attack in his office in Whitechapel, east London. His shocking murder has had a terrible and lasting effect on his family, friends and the wider community. His family and community have been deprived of a father, husband and tireless helper of those in need.

To our utter disgust and horror, the killer was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended in 2007). We have now learnt that he may be released back into the community in November 2018!

Why oppose the killer’s release?

Zakariyya’s family and friends firmly oppose the possible release of the killer because of his volatile mental state, his criminal background having killed Zakariyya, and a history of serious violence in that he has been twice arrested for stabbing people. He is a serious risk to the community, his own family and that of Zakariyya.

Zakariyya's wife and children, as well as other family members, have not been able to lead their lives normally ever since the brutal killing. As no motive has ever been established for the killing, his family remains fearful that he may come after them individually, as he is unpredictable and volatile.

With knife crime being an epidemic in London, we feel this can partly be addressed by applying common sense to decision-making in the mental health sector to prevent the public being unnecessarily exposed to dangerous people.

The Campaign

Family and friends of Zakariyya have launched a community-wide campaign ahead of a tribunal (hearing) on 12 November 2018, where the killer may be granted release. This campaign is supported by Rushanara Ali, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, the East London Mosque, Hundredfamilies.org and others. We feel the possible release of the perpetrator comes too soon after the killing -- just three years isn’t enough to decide if it’s safe for him to be released.

Aims:

The campaign seeks to:

1) Put pressure on the government not to release the perpetrator who still poses too much of a risk to the community and the victim’s family;
2) Ask for a change in the law, as victims are effectively voiceless, currently not considered as interested parties and decisions are made by a faceless group. Justice is not seen to be done;
3) Warn that the tribunal will be responsible should the perpetrator be released and attacks again;
4) Demand action from Home Secretary and the Ministry of Justice.

JUSTICE FOR ZAKARIYYA ISLAM

*Demand that Zakariyya’s killer is not released into the community as he poses a risk to the victim’s family and to the public*

*Demand a change in the law to make tribunal processes transparent, and to better serve the needs of victims and their families*

Friday 9 November 2018

London Muslim Centre

Zakariya Islam, a pillar of the community, a loving father to three young daughters, much loved, and highly respected in East London, was brutally and senselessly murdered in September, 2015 during a frenzied knife attack in his office in Whitechapel. Rather than face a criminal trial and be punished for what was a premeditated, heinous act, his killer was sectioned under the Mental Health Act for treatment and avoided being dealt with appropriately by the Criminal Justice System.

We have now learnt that he may be released back into the community in November 2018. This is just three years after he brutally murdered Zakariyya – justice has not been served. He was previously arrested for stabbing, and the historic lack of appropriate care provision and close supervision makes his possible release now deeply worrying for the community especially against a knife crime epidemic in London.
