Support our work with the Sanctuary Caravan
Please Help Support Djuna and Hannah’s Work with the Sanctuary Caravan!
Asylum seekers and refugees fleeing violence and persecution need safe passage.
We (Hannah Wilton & Djuna Schamus) are volunteering with the New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC) and its Sanctuary Caravan. The Sanctuary Caravan is a group of volunteers from all over the country who support the thousands of asylum applicants currently waiting in Tijuana to be processed. As volunteers, we are helping our migrant friends navigate this bureaucracy, and then accompany them as they cross the border.
We are asking you—our friends, family, and wider community—to support our work with the Sanctuary Caravan at this time when the most vulnerable among us are being targeted by hateful rhetoric and physical violence.
We will be traveling to San Diego/Tijuana with the New Sanctuary Coalition in early January to work with migrants there. We are joining Djuna's mom, Nancy, who has been working with the NSC in New York City for the past year. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to further support the work that the New Sanctuary Coalition is doing. We are kicking off our fundraising efforts before we leave, and will be continuing to take donations during and after our time in San Diego/Tijuana. All of the funds raised with go directly to the organization. If you can, please help support this incredibly important work!
Here is a bit more about the Sanctuary Caravan approach:
Our approach is unique. It was developed by the New Sanctuary Coalition, the New York City-based parent organization for the Sanctuary Caravan. Volunteers in the mobile Pro Se Legal Clinic are trained to sensitively work with people to represent themselves through the immigration process. This approach empowers our migrant friends to be their own best advocates. We seek legal advice with experienced attorneys in our community, as needed, but our friends seeking asylum are at the center of all of our work. All of us volunteers are extensively trained.
If you want to support the Sanctuary Caravan directly or learn more, you can do that at www.sanctuarycaravan.org.
A bit more about us:
We believe that people have the right to migrate. We also believe that the current violence—both physical and bureaucratic—being directed at asylum seekers who have gathered at the border is immoral. All Sanctuary Caravan volunteers are committed to nonviolence, and we are equally committed to standing for liberty and equality for all people.
Again, funds that you contribute will go directly to the New Sanctuary Coalition’s Sanctuary Caravan to assist migrants on the Tijuana/US border.
Each contribution brings the Caravan closer to Sanctuary. Thank you so much for your support.
