Sophie's Cancer Battle

My name is Mike. I have been a Manufacturing Engineer for the past 20 years and a Wedding Photographer for the past 10 years. Naturally I'm always looking for a solution, be it for Engineering or better lighting in my photography. My wife, Sophie has been diagnosed with Stage 4, Grade 3 Colon Cancer. She has also had genetic testing confirming she has a gene mutation known as BRAF v600e - CRC. This means the cancer can rapidly spread and if left untreated will take over within a matter of months.

I am currently campaining for my wife to raise funds for alternative treatments. These are known as Immunotherapies. They work the same way as vaccines for polio, for example. They target specific cancer cell proteins to allow the immune system to recognise and fight the cancer with your body's own defences. Currently Sophie is receiving Chemotherapy. As many people know, or may not, Chemo works in an attempt to kill off everything, weakening your immune system and leaving you susceptible to infection which in turn many patients succumb to the disease. Please read our story and help me find the solution to save my wife. She is the centre of mine and my children's world.

As Sophie's ambassador for her fight I've been less than faithful in posting updates, so I apologise. It's unfair to everyone who has given so much support to us. Since my last update she has ended her Chemotherapy treatment due to the build up of side effects which were taking a massive toll on her body. Back at the end of February Sophie had her first Immunotherapy treatment the day before we left for a trip to the Peak District. She did very well and managed that weekend to climb Mam Tor and hike to Bamford Edge in Hope Valley, Derbyshire which is where this photo was taken. We lucked out that weekend with the weather as it was 17c and sunny the whole time. So thank you all for supporting us and making this difficult time a bit easier to keep our heads up and enjoy life!

I'm blown away by the response and everyone who gave all they could to help our family. I can't thank you all enough. I will be bringing Sophie's story to the media. My hope is that we can raise enough to get Sophie an alternative treatment known as Immunotherapy. There are a number of different treatments for varying types of cancer. Because Sophie has the gene mutation BRAF v600e, she would be receptive to the treatment. There is an exponentially higher response rate compared to Chemo and it uses the body's natural defences to turn on the cancer and kill it off instead of basically poisoning your body in the hopes that will kill off the cancer. I will keep you posted with the research I'm doing. So thank you all again. We'll keep on fighting for Sophie. X
